one of my colleagues is getting married in may so we hosted a shower for her today. i had this brilliant idea to make mini, three tier wedding cakes for each guest. fail. i baked a ton of sheet cake [see photo above] and then cut each tier out with different sized cookie cutters. well, it turns out icing cake without a firm edge is very, very hard. i have a new appreciation for cake decorators and fondant. i threw away about four pounds of perfectly good, semi expensive cake before deciding to keep the two that turned out halfway normal and make the rest into cupcakes. i used the tiered cakes as a holder for my "happy marriage" banner. what's that pearl of wisdom? the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray? true dat. better luck next time.
